Not good detective research.
I vaguely remembered as a once-obsessive stamp collector — and just now verified — that Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika were all used officially for those countries on postage stamps as long ago as the 1930s. They were genuine names accepted by Great Britain, and they even had King George V’s picture on the stamps. Tht British “protectorate” term was merely part of a desperate political effort to prevent Kenyan independence long before it finally happened in 1963.
